2018-19 Season

Pegasus Theatre Chicago’s 2018-19 season offers productions that explore women’s worth beginning with Eclipsed, written by Danai Gurira and directed by Producing Artistic Director Ilesa Duncan and followed by the 32nd Young Playwrights Festival.  Produced in association with Chicago Dramatists, the season responds to #MeToo and the tendency to relegate women of color’s issues to an afterthought. Pegasus also plans to host its annual MUSE programming during the season as post-show discussions and readings of works by and about women’s unheard voices. All programs take place at Pegasus’s resident home Chicago Dramatists, 773 N. Aberdeen.

ECLIPSED

by Danai Gurira | October 4-November 4th | Chicago Dramatists

Set in the midst of the Second Liberian Civil War, Danai Gurira’s play follows the captive ‘wives’ of a Commanding Officer in the rebel army. A teen girl has recently arrived and the wives protect and care for her in the dilapidated, one-bedroom shack the women share. Just as the new girl begins to adjust to life at the compound, their fragile sisterhood is thrown off balance when a wife returns from the battlefield, after having escaped the army camp to fight as soldier in the resistance. Struck by the realization that she may not have to resign herself to the grim reality of life in the compound, The Girl must choose whether to stay with the women who have done so much for her, or to join the freedom fighter and chart her own destiny as a soldier. With deep emotional strength, brutal honesty, and a surprising amount of humor, the women of Eclipsed fight to do something truly extraordinary: survive.

32nd Annual Young Playwrights Festival

January 3-27, 2019 | Chicago Dramatists

The season continues with full production of winning plays from the annual playwriting competition for high-school-age scribes in Chicago. Three one-act plays will be showcased as part of Pegasus’ main stage season. The second oldest such festival in the country, this annual tradition regularly receives over 500 submissions from students throughout the area. From those, the winning playwrights are chosen to join with professional artists to workshop and stage their scripts.

Be sure to witness the amazing results and enjoy an evening of theater from tomorrow’s theater stars.
